To reach this goal, Student Health 101 and the University of Minnesota School of Public Health have partnered to launch an exclusive suite of health and wellness courses to promote healthy choices and successful campus communities.
Our courses apply the latest research in both health promotion and online education to deliver one credit equivalent, semester-long courses that can be implemented with no budgetary impact.
Students who effectively manage lifestyle issues perform better academically, build more positive relationships with peers, and transition more smoothly into adulthood. This is the ultimate goal of Student Health 101 and the University of Minnesota School of Public Health.
The Need for Student Wellness Education
As many students arrive on campuses each year, they struggle to effectively cope with a new environment, academic demands, and the pressure to succeed. Many are ill prepared for the social rigors of college and lack the practical skills necessary for self-care. They are bombarded with a variety of messages about health from friends, parents, and the media. This lack of consistent messaging in conjunction with such a major life transition emphasizes the increasing need for colleges and universities to implement comprehensive health education programs to help mitigate student health and safety risks.
Health issues have a significant impact on not only students’ well-being but also their academic achievement and retention. Unfortunately, a majority of students report serious amounts of stress, and many use unhealthy coping mechanisms such as alcohol or tobacco in an attempt to manage it. Most do not meet recommended dietary or physical activity guidelines, or get enough sleep.
Our courses allow students to receive trusted information anonymously, encouraging students to find answers to questions that they may be uncomfortable to ask of a peer or advisor. Courses are developed using our peer education approach, resulting in a consistent “teach don’t preach” student voice throughout, using evidence-based lesson content and strategies to encourage healthier decisions.
Students engage in critical reflection of personal behaviors, as well as general campus culture and norms, through the course assignments. In addition to completing weekly lessons, students complete weekly assignments and quizzes, with grade accountability to keep them engaged.
Students who take our courses get to choose how to access the lesson material based on their preferred learning style. They can interact with the online slide show format via computer or tablet, download lesson transcripts and read the text from a computer or printed hard copy, or download audio files and listen to the narrated content from a smartphone, tablet, or MP3 player. The courses are available anytime, anywhere!
All course materials are delivered through existing campus learning management systems, providing students with convenience and flexibility. It allows education to reach a large number of students because they’re not limited by a set class schedule or classroom size.
Over the past several years, the Student Health 101 program has evolved into a fully integrated wellness communication system. Student Health 101 seeks to create valuable content for students that is distributed in an active way throughout the school year. The development of Student Health 101 has been driven by the needs of three major stakeholders: students, administrators, and parents.
While Student Health 101 is currently delivering a proven health and wellness solution on more than 500 college and university campuses, we realize that there’s no one solution that can address every students’ unique health and wellness needs. That’s why we’re launching a partnership with the Rothenberger Institute to deliver comprehensive, in-depth courses to students to help them make more positive health and wellness decisions throughout their entire college career.
The Rothenberger Institute at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health was established in memory of James H. Rothenberger III, Morse Alumni Distinguished Teaching Instructor of Public Health, to continue his legacy of providing students with knowledge and skills to lead healthy, productive, and balanced lives.
Guided by the Division of Epidemiology and Community Health within the University of Minnesota School of Public Health, the Rothenberger Institute addresses the concerns of many college administrators and educators by providing their students an understanding of health and safety issues unique to college students.
The vision of the University of Minnesota School of Public Health is to be the leading provider of comprehensive health education. This is achieved by employing innovative technologies and cutting edge research to create relevant and motivational curriculums and by building collaborative partnerships to reach more students.
