How To Get A Great Aerobic Workout

Students from around the country give their advice on how to get a great aerobic workout.

I run one mile at a moderate pace to build up a sweat. Then, I walk a quarter mile, stretch, and walk another quarter mile. Then, I run 1.5 to 2 miles changing my speed for about 40 seconds of fast-paced running, followed by 1 to 1.5 minutes of jogging. I repeat until I reach my distance goal.

Working out through playing on the Kinect for Xbox 360. It's amazing how much you can do with those games. Also, I watch exercise videos through my Roku device on Netflix and other channels offered free of charge.

Punch the heavy bag. You can take a few breaks, but try to go for about 25 minutes. Alternate between power, speed, and a mixture of both.

Try a rowing machine. Do an erg 5,000-meter row at your own pace. It’s a good switch up from running, and it's a full-body workout. [Note: An erg is short for an erg machine or ergometer, a rowing machine that closely simulates rowing in a boat.]

Zumba! It’s so much fun. That's my favorite kind of exercise because dancing is part of my life. Also, if you love swimming, swim. It’s the best exercise you can get. It works out every single muscle in your body.

Going on a run for 30 to 45 minutes is a really great workout. Running on treadmill gives you cardio, but running outside is way more challenging than just running on a steady treadmill that does half the work for you. It may be hard to motivate yourself, but make yourself go almost “too far,” yet still a distance where you can make it back to your starting location. After your run, check your time and distance. For the next time, set yourself a higher goal (shorter time and/or longer distance).

I use the elliptical machine while watching a show that gets my mind off the most boring thing in the world (cardio). Also, I throw in a few minutes of jumping rope to mix it up and listen to fast-paced techno music to keep the tempo up.
